Just Riding Along:Clipping In and Out of Clipless Pedals

WHEN YOU BUY YOUR PEDALS, have the shop install them, then put your bike in one of their trainers and practice these motions over and over. It is easiest to clip in the pedal at the bottom of the stroke, closest to the ground at the 6 o’clock position. The pedal has a spring that, when you push down and forward firmly with the cleat that is bolted to the bottom of your shoe, opens slightly to allow your shoe to become attached.

To release, keeping your feet level to the ground with your dominant foot forward in the 3 o’clock position, press down lightly while twisting your foot so your heel kicks out slightly away from the bike. It should not take much effort to do this. Many pedals have adjustable springs to make this motion easier. If you find this very difficult, have the shop adjust the spring tension until you’re able to easily release your foot. Get used to releasing your balance foot first so when you come to stops you’re ready to reach your leg out.

Practice in the trainer—20, 30, 50 times—until it feels somewhat natural. Then get ready to try it on the road. Always unclip your feet as you slow down but well before you’re stopped. You can still rest your shoes on your pedals for stability, just don’t have the cleats engaged. That way you’re ready to put down your balance foot as soon as you come to a stop. Practice in quiet, low-traffic areas before you head out for a long ride.
